Providing School Supplies and Living Essentials for the Neediest Children
During my visit to the Nkasioki Primary School, I brought socks, underwear, shoes, books, soaps, and food for the nineteen neediest children of the school. With the help of my family and local community, I have provided school essentials including notebooks, pencils and pens as well as soccer balls and air pumps to fill up these balls for all the school children. I am extremely grateful to Moseka who had provided us a glimpse and need of the school prior to my visit. Additionally, Moseka with help of Ms. Stark prepared for me the list of essential supplies for the needy children.
In addition, I will be visiting the school in the future to be able to provide the children with more living and school essentials they will need from the money I raised through different fundraising events with the support from my family, friends and community.
Rain Water Tank Project
The Nkasioki Primary school is located in a region of Kenya known as the Maasai Mara reservation. The Maasai Mara has rainfall only for two months throughout the year and for the rest of the year, the land remains as an arid region. For the students of the Nkasioki Primary School, they have to walk miles to gather water from a nearby river. This is a huge difficulty and very inconvenient for the children to carry all this water for a long time to their houses. Also, water from the rivers is contaminated and can cause serious health concerns including diarrhea and typhoid. The Nkasioki Primary School has two water tanks – one is damaged and cannot store any water in it, and the other is empty and has no water in it but has a 5,000-liter capacity. The only way the school can get water is from the rain which is infrequent. Throughout the school year, the school barely collects any water and this is a major concern the teachers of the school have brought up to me. My goal is to raise and collect money to support the school with a new 10,000-liter water tank and refill their current existing 5,000-liter water tank. These well-conditioned full water tanks will be enough to sustain and support all 400 kids and about 20 teachers for a term. The total cost is about $1440. All members of the Nkasioki Primary School will be able to use these rainwater tanks for drinking purposes as the water is very clean, and can use it to wash hands to maintain appropriate hygiene.
Food Porridge Program and Solving the problem of Significant School Absences
Food hunger is a major problem faced in rural Kenya and can lead to malnutrition problems such as osteoporosis, anemia, marasmus, etc. Moreover, it is even worse if children develop these problems at young ages. In the Nkasioki Primary School, some kids will not go to school if they are starving or will skip school to find work to simply get food for themselves including a student named James who I met personally. They will only go to school if there is food there, however, currently, the school can’t afford to initiate a food program. This motivated me to adopt a Food Porridge Program for all the 300 students of the school. The cost of a Food Porridge Program will be $2700 (annually) and will provide enough porridge to every member of the school daily. This porridge is safe to consume and is also very nutritious so it will help resolve the problem of food hunger and undernutrition among these school going kids. In addition, for the kids who are not able to go to school because of their extreme levels of starvation or their immense amount of work to get money or food for themselves, this porridge program will motivate these kids to go to school. Education is extremely important for these kids to accomplish their dreams and achieve their desired profession and if they miss out on education, it will negatively impact their future. This solution of a porridge program will solve the problem of the significant school absences causing all these children to start coming to school to be one step closer to make their dreams a possible reality and is very crucial to the success of all the students in the village.
Providing sanitary bathrooms for the school
In the Nkasioki Primary School, there is only one bathroom that is unable to serve the needs and demands of this school of about 300 students and 20 teachers. This bathroom is in horrible condition and is shared by everyone in the school (all genders and ages). One bathroom with a huge number of kids is a major problem specified by the teachers and head master of the school. There will be huge lines for the bathroom causing them to miss out in their much-needed education. If we can provide this school with a few well-functioning clean gender-neutral bathrooms, then it will increase the efficiency of the whole school using the bathroom and can significantly improve the hygiene and safety of the school. The cost of getting a new bathroom for the school is about 2700$.
Paying school fees for not-attending and attending school students
When I was travelling around the Olooriri village during my visit, I met a couple of students who had to stop attending school as their families were unable to pay the school fees. My goal is to raise enough funds to pay for as much children possible who are not able to continue to go to school. I am already sponsoring Mosoni who is an active second grade student at the Nkasioki Primary School of age 8. You can find out more about Mosoni here. I want to support Mosoni as much as I can to make her dreams of becoming a physician possible. I am helping her out with paying her school fees and uniform, medical bills, basic living essentials, etc by raising funds through tutoring in my community. If we can support other school-going students like Mosoni who are unable to pay their school fees, then we can help more kids accomplish their dreams and be responsible citizens. School is important for all children so paying for school fees for both non-attending and attending school students is a high value project.
Classroom Infrastructure
The head teacher offered me a tour of all the classrooms in the school and I got to see the condition of the classrooms and the affect it has on the learning environment between the teachers and students. Most of the classrooms I saw were very small and had about 30-40 students in each classroom. I observed that all the children were squished together and there was inadequate amount of bench space for the kids to relax and learn. In addition, the classrooms were in very bad condition including the floors, walls, ceiling, etc. With bigger, new, and clean classrooms for the children, it will make their learning experience better as well as make the jobs of the teacher easier. The cost to renovate the classrooms of the Nkasioki Primary School is x$. This project is more expensive however, it is very essential for the kids to enjoy knowing that they will have a safe learning environment.
